Festive Futsal fun for Robins U7s and U9s

Robins U7s and U9 Reds both enjoyed successful trips to the @futsal tournament this weekend. The U7s went all the way and won their age group tournament, a fantastic achievement, while U9 Reds got all the way to the finals before being narrowly defeated at the last.

Robins U7 celebrate their triumph at the Swindon Futsal tournament

Robins U7s finished an amazing 2013 by winning the Swindon futsal tournament on Saturday morning. After winning their 4 group games, including one against a very good Yate side, they comfortably beat Bicester in the semi final. A very close final against a strong Highworth team ended in a 1-1 draw, so the final would be decided by a penalty shootout. After Henry had saved 2 penalties Matthew coolly stepped up to score the winning penalty. This was a great achievement and tops off what has been an impressive 4 months of their first League season in which they have won every game bar one. Well done to all the players, parents and everyone involved!

Robins U9 Reds with their runners-up medals at the Swindon Futsal tournament

The U9s competition was in the afternoon and it's fair to say we started slowly, possibly due to the slightly unfamiliar format compared to the 7v7 game on grass. We only just progressed out of the group stage to the knockout stages but once in the knockout stages we found our feet, starting with a strong performance in the quarter finals and winning a penalty shoot-out. A comfortable win in the semis, put us through to face a very strong Salisbury team in the final. With just over a minute to go, the score was 1-1 and a fair reflection of a very good game between two good teams. But then Salisbury clinched the winner and we just ran out of time to get a second equaliser so had to make do with runners-up spot. A really fun afternoon and a great achievement, especially given this was our first run-out in competitive futsal, and a great way to round off what has been a very successful 2013 for the U9s.
